Official templates

Use the journal's official templates: they already include the required formatting and manuscript structure. Upload both files in the "Files" step of the submission — the anonymized manuscript goes to the reviewers; the title page stays with the editorial team only.

  • A structured abstract of up to 250 words and 3 to 6 keywords (preferably MeSH) are included.
  • The study was approved by an ethics committee, when applicable, and the approval number is reported.
  • All authors have approved the submitted version and meet the ICMJE authorship criteria.

Author guidelines

1. Language and file format

OSR publishes in English only. Manuscripts must be written in clear, correct English (American or British spelling, used consistently) and submitted as an editable file (.docx or .odt), A4 or US Letter page size, Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing, 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins, with page and line numbers. Authors who are not native English speakers are encouraged to have their manuscript language-edited before submission.

2. Submission files

  • Title page (separate file): full title, short (running) title, full name, institutional affiliation (institution, city, country), ORCID and email of all authors; corresponding author; author contributions (CRediT); funding; competing interests; acknowledgments.
  • Anonymized manuscript: the full text without names, affiliations, acknowledgments or any other information that could identify the authors, including in the file properties. During review, self-citations should appear as "Author, year" in the text and in the reference list.
  • Figures and tables, when applicable, and supplementary materials.
  • Cover letter (optional), presenting the contribution of the study.

3. Manuscript structure

Original articles follow the structure Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusion. The structured abstract (Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusion), of up to 250 words in English, is followed by 3 to 6 keywords, preferably from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

Clinical trials must report the registration number at the end of the abstract. The methods section must describe the study design, participants, eligibility criteria, sample size calculation, instruments, procedures, statistical analysis and the ethics committee approval.

4. Length

  • Original article: up to 5,000 words, up to 6 figures or tables and up to 50 references;
  • Systematic review or meta-analysis: up to 6,000 words and up to 80 references;
  • Review article: up to 6,000 words;
  • Case report: up to 2,500 words, an abstract of up to 150 words and up to 20 references;
  • Letter to the editor: up to 1,000 words, no abstract, up to 10 references.

The word count excludes the abstract, references, tables and figures.

5. Tables and figures

Tables and figures must be numbered in order of citation, with a self-explanatory title and source. Tables must be submitted in an editable format, without vertical lines. Figures must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (JPG, PNG or TIFF). Third-party images require permission for use.

6. References

References follow the Vancouver style (ICMJE recommendations), numbered consecutively in the order in which they first appear in the text, using superscript Arabic numerals. Include the DOI whenever available. Example:

Buysse DJ, Reynolds CF, Monk TH, Berman SR, Kupfer DJ. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index: a new instrument for psychiatric practice and research. Psychiatry Res. 1989;28(2):193-213. doi:10.1016/0165-1781(89)90047-4

7. Required declarations

At the end of the manuscript (in the identified version), include: author contributions (CRediT), funding, competing interests, ethics approval and consent, data availability and use of artificial intelligence, when applicable.

8. After acceptance

Authors receive the typeset proofs for review and must return them within the stated deadline, limiting changes to the correction of errors. Changes to the content at this stage require the editor's approval.

Copyright and license

Authors retain copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication. Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits sharing and adaptation of the work for any purpose, provided that the authorship and initial publication in this journal are properly acknowledged.

Authors may enter into separate, additional agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of the published version (for example, in institutional repositories or as book chapters), with acknowledgment of its initial publication in OSR.

Fees

Oxton Sleep Research follows the diamond open access model: it charges no fees for submission, peer review, article processing (APC) or publication. Authors do not pay to publish, and readers do not pay to access content.

Editorial costs are covered by Oxton Education. The absence of fees does not affect the rigor of the review process: all manuscripts follow the same screening and peer review workflow.
